About Us

Need for Council

The agricultural industry, including growers, is struggling with the lack of standards for data imagery gather from remote sensing (RS) devices on aerial vehicles, including aircraft, Unmanned Aircraft Vehicles, and satellites.

The Agricultural Aerial Remote Sensing Standards Council  (AgRS Council) is a non-profit, professional organization that serves end-users, product and service developers, and  researchers who recognize the need to develop global standards to provide consistent, reliable, scalable, scientific data creating the ability to generate sufficiently accurate and detailed analysis.

Utah State University is the lead academic member of the AgRS Council.

Our Team

An outstanding team has been assembled to launch the Council.  The team includes farmers, former Department of Agriculture executives, and leaders in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) research, experts in IT infrastructure, and our counsel is the leading advisor in establishing Standards Setting Organizations.

Examples of Data Quality and Standards Issues

In a paper entitled “The remote sensing data from your UAV probably isn’t scientific, but it should be!”, presented by Dr. Mac McKee , Utah State University, at the 2017 Society of Photographic Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) conference, specific data quality and standards issues were identified. His paper and findings are summarized here.

Objectives and Benefits

Create Platform

To create a platform for members to exchange views, research, and enabling technologies related to aerial remote sensing for agriculture.

Provide Forum

To provide a forum to address issues of common interest through working-groups, conferences, seminars, and workshops.

Disseminate Information

To assist members in the dissemination of scientific, technical, policy and program information in all aspects of aerial remote sensing for agriculture.

Promote Cooperation

To promote cooperation, collaboration, and coordination of efforts among members in the development of industry standards for agricultural aerial remote sensing.

Concensus and Education

To develop industry consensus on all aspects of aerial remote sensing for agriculture and to educate the industry on the work of the AgRS Council

Member Benefits

AgRS Council aims to enhance the awareness and knowledge of remote sensing using manned aircraft, UAVs, and satellites through online discussion platform connecting experts with members, access to timely research, annual conference, and regional workshops. The AgRS Council will develop a framework for development of global standards to provide consistent, reliable, scalable, scientific data creating the ability to generate sufficiently accurate and detailed analysis.
